Not sure if I sent it through. This is due Monday. Please supplement the info from the doco with any other sources you deem necessary.
On Monday, show me your notes so I can see what your ‘style’ is and whether you are keeping up.

Watch the documentary and take notes under the headings below.
It is your homework to complete these notes. Use your textbook (P46 – 56). Use the internet to find additional information if needed.

  • Balkans were unstable, why?
  • Serbia’s position and aims before 1914?
  • AH’s position and aims before 1914?
  • Assassination of FF (not too much detail necessary)
  • Aftermath of assassination: AH’s response
  • European attitudes towards July crisis (Germany, England, AH, Russia)
  • Why did a Balkan crisis turn into a World War?
  • Steps to war (Why did England declare war? Note: include brief info on ‘Scrap of paper’ = Treaty of London)



Quick timeline, steps to war (1914):
June 28                 Archduke Franz Ferdinand heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife are assassinated in Sarajevo.
July 28                   Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
July 31                   As an ally of Serbia, Russia announces full mobilization of her armed forces.
August 1              Germany mobilizes her armed forces and declares war on Russia.
August 3              Germany declares war on France.
August 4              Germany declares war on neutral Belgium and invades in a right flanking move designed to defeat France quickly. As a result of this invasion, Britain declares war on Germany.
August 6              Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia.
August 26-30                      German army, led by Erich Ludendorff and Paul von Hindenburg achieves its greatest victory of the war on the Eastern front against Russia at the Battle of Tennenberg.
September 5-10                               First Battle of the Marne halts German invasion in France.
September 15                   First trenches of the Western front are dug.
