Here is the homework for Thursday.

• Copy the key dates from the start of Chapter 1. You won’t need to know them off by heart just yet, but you should consider having an “important dates” section, or create an online timeline, or start an excel file on your computer.
• Write down the meaning of the key terms. Use the internet and consult the sections in Chapter 1, very useful info on most of these key concepts:

o Colonialism
o Imperialism
o Nationalism
o Industrialisation
o Militarism
o Capitalism
o Total war
o Limited war
o Alliance

Read Chapter 1.  answer these key questions. (Note that they start with WHY)
• Why was imperialism such an important ideology before 1914?
• Why did Fascism and National Socialism develop into major political movements?

Using the info in Chapter 1, create a dot pointed overview, or a mind map or a summary of each of the major powers. (See textbook)

General note:
Your textbook has “key questions” in the margins. These key questions are the best way to check your understanding of the text. It is assumed that you know the meanings of the key terms. If you encounter any unfamiliar key terms, make sure you know them for the future.
